Our last installment of the Best Cards Ever Made series featured one of the best turn 1 plays in Innistrad-Dark Ascension limited play. Today we take a look at one of the best turn one plays in all of Magic – One With Nothing.
I think One with Nothing is a top 1-drop for three main reasons.
First, it immediately enables BOTH Threshold and Hellbent when you’re on the draw. Plop a Swamp down and drop this baby and all your other babies in the trash bin. Boom, auto Threshold and Hellbent – COMBO!
Second, that hand full of fatties you started out with is now Reanimate ready. Just rip one of your four Reanimates and you’re on your way to glory.
Third, and the most common reason for playing this card, is that it will mindfreak your opponents so intensely that they’ll instantly concede in the confusion. You’ll see their mind blown by the perplexity that is watching an opponent drop his whole hand in the bin on turn 1.
First there will be an slight utterance of something like, “uhhhhh….okay?” followed by the eyes rolling back into the head, and finishing with the acknowledgment that they simply don’t know what to do about it. ‘How could you possibly win without a hand,’ they’ll ask themselves, going into the tank to ponder what could possibly be coming next. But they’ll never come back from that thought, as they’ll never figure out your possible plan. Brain fried from the insanity, the scoop is imminent.
Don’t worry about building around this card, as it’ll easily win games on its own. As the flavor text says, “When nothing remains, everything is equally possible.” Indeed.
